Voorlezen is heel belangrijk. Het stimuleert de taalontwikkeling en het prikkelt de fantasie. Daarnaast ervaren kinderen door het voorlezen vaak dat lezen leuk is. Hierdoor gaan ze zelf meer lezen. Als je veel leest, leer je veel en gaat het lezen steeds makkelijker. Daarnaast zorgt veel lezen ervoor dat je een goede lezer wordt.
De meeste kinderen vinden het heerlijk als er wordt voorgelezen. Voorlezen bevordert de taalontwikkeling, vergoot de woordenschat en stimuleert het leesplezier. Samen lezen is gezellig én leerzaam.
Zelfs baby’s genieten van het voorlezen. Ze leren klanken, vergroten hun woordenschat en leren zich te concentreren. Onderzoek laat zien dat baby’s, peuters en kleuters die worden voorgelezen, betere lezers worden dan leeftijdsgenootjes die niet worden voorgelezen. Veel ouders stoppen met voorlezen zodra hun kind zelf begint te lezen. Maar ook dan is het verstandig om te blijven voorlezen. Kinderen genieten op die leeftijd nog steeds van het voorlezen en het stimuleert kinderen om zelf te lezen.
Maak elke dag even tijd om voor te lezen, bijvoorbeeld voor het naar bed gaan. Een vast moment maakt lezen tot een ritueel en iets vertrouwds.
Kijk samen naar het boek. Kijk naar de kaft van het boek en lees de titel voor. Vraag kinderen waar ze denken dat het boek over zal gaan en waarom ze dat denken. Zo prikkel je de fantasie en leren kinderen oplossingen te bedenken. Ook kun je zo controleren of kinderen het verhaal hebben begrepen. Daarnaast stimuleert het ook het begrijpend lezen.
Vaak leven kinderen mee met de personen in het boek. Ze lachen om grapjes of reageren om het verhaal. Speel hier op in. Laat kinderen vertellen en vraag naar wat ze er van vinden.
Kies een boek dat past bij de interesse van kinderen of laat een kind zelf eens een boek kiezen. Het lezen is extra leuk als een kind veel belangstelling heeft. Sommige kinderen houden van fantasieverhalen terwijl andere kinderen meer van informatieve boeken houden.
In sommige boeken staan moeilijke woorden. Vaak wordt de betekenis in de context van het verhaal wel duidelijk. Soms wordt het woord ook duidelijk door een plaatje. Leg de betekenis van het woord uit of kijk naar de plaatjes. Door het uit te leggen of een plaatje te laten zien, onthouden kinderen de betekenis beter en leren ze nieuwe woorden.
In de bibliotheek vind je veel tips voor leuke boeken. Kinderen kunnen gratis lid worden van de bibliotheek. Je kunt ook (voor)leestips aan andere ouders vragen. Ook op internet worden veel boeken door anderen beoordeeld en aanbevolen. Ook kun je op internet zoeken. Op www.leesmevoor.nl worden boeken voorgelezen. Je kunt gratis luisteren naar de verhalen die worden voorgelezen.
Misschien is een ‘zwerfboek’ ook eens leuk om te lezen. Zwerfboeken zijn boeken die zwerven van kind naar kind met een Kinderzwerfboek sticker op de kaft. Ze blijven achter op school, in ziekenhuizen, of een van de Kinderzwerfboek-stations.
